Get Involved

Opportunities for involvement at Capital University Law School don’t end at graduation. Our alumni participate in a variety of mutually beneficial leadership, mentoring and networking opportunities available to them through the Law School.

Leadership Opportunities

The Law School has several boards of alumni that help set our organization’s vision:

CLE Presentations

The Law School offers numerous CLE events during the year. Our alumni participate both as presenters and participants, earning necessary CLE credits. Individuals interested in presenting at upcoming CLE events should contact Assistant Dean Shawn Beem (sbeem@law.capital.edu or 614-236-6889). For a list of upcoming CLEs, click here.

Student Organization Events

The Law School’s various student services offices offer programs and events in which alumni play an important role. If you’re interested in being a guest speaker for a program, please let us know.

Moot Court

Capital University Law School has a strong record of excellence in moot court (LINK) competitions, which offer students practical experience performing legal research and presenting in a courtroom. Our vigorous moot court program provides students with an intense learning experience in a small group setting with strong faculty support. Alumni often serve as judges and in other capacities.

Externships

Capital University Law School’s expansive externship program offers varied opportunities for CapLaw students to earn academic credit for experience in the legal field. These site experiences with courts, government agencies, non-profits and in-house counsel offer practical experience helping attorneys perform real legal work. Alumni often serve as site supervisors and mentors for the externs. Alumni who work in court, government, agency, or non-profit settings (private law firms are not eligible) and are interested in hosting an extern should contact Assistant Dean Shawn Beem (sbeem@law.capital.edu or 614-236-6889).

Job Postings

The Law School’s Office of Professional Development is eager to post any student internship or attorney opportunities your organization may have available. Students are interested in full-time and part-time positions throughout the academic year and during the summer. The OPD also coordinates the Fall & Spring Recruitment Programs (OCI) for students. To discuss about your employment opportunity, please email contact Assistant Dean Shawn Beem (sbeem@law.capital.edu or 614-236-6889). To learn more about our Job Posting Board and Recruiting Programs, click here.

Pro Bono Service

The Law School’s Pro Bono Recognition Program encourages law student pro bono service by recognizing their successful completion of at least 50 hours of approved pro bono work. Pro bono legal services may include giving legal advice or resolving a legal problem through litigation, legislation, regulation, or alternative dispute resolution, but only to the extent consistent with the ethical constraints on the authorized practice of law. Many alumni serve as supervising attorneys to current students. For more information about the program or how to become a supervising attorney, please contact Pro Bono Coordinator Ashley Messick (amessick@law.capital.edu or 614-236-6887).

Mock Interviews

Students are always looking for ways to practice and to improve their interviewing skills. The Office of Professional Development encourages alumni to lend their time and experience in conducting mock interviews with students. Whether at your office or as part of the Law School’s Mock Interview Program, we hope you’ll get involved. To become a member of our mock interviewer list, please email the Office of Professional Development.
