Why Maurice Wells Chose Capital Law

2/13/2015  - Maurice Wells ’17, a 1L, is familiar with tradition. Whether it is following in his mother’s footsteps as an attorney, or being a member of The Ohio State University football team, Maurice knows the importance of hard work and determination.

His story doesn’t end there. Maurice took some time off after he graduated from OSU in 2009. He worked for four years with Southern Wine & Spirits as a regional manager doing everything from marketing to distribution.

Originally from Jacksonville, FL, Maurice is married with two daughters. His legal career is important not only to him, but also to his family. He works hard in an out of the classroom to balance his responsibilities as a law student, a husband and a father. 

Maurice chose Capital because of the “atmosphere and the personal interaction with professors and classmates in a smaller, private school.” He found appealing Capital’s “flexibility with class loads at day or night, part-time and full-time, which gives you more options.” He knows that raising a family is full of variables, so he likes the flexible options available to him should his family’s current circumstances change.

Since he has been at Capital, he knows he made the right choice. Maurice credits the faculty with helping him reach his full potential. “Having Professors Peggy Cordray and Stan Darling helped me feel confident that I’m capable and can perform well,” he said. “The small atmosphere allowed me to build a relationship with my professors. It confirmed my pre-conceived notions were correct about working in smaller groups with classmates and professors.”

While Maurice is still in the beginning of his law school career, he is excited about the opportunities to merge his passions for sports and law into his career in Columbus. “The way collegiate sports are changing, I see an opportunity in the future to help the NCAA with the role of amateurism in college sports,” he explained. “I want to help collegiate athletes transition professionally and provide legal guidance.” Growing his legal network to enhance the connections he built as a student athlete should enable him to pursue both of his passions as an attorney.
