Why Maria Hicks Chose Capital

3/5/2019  -  Until two years ago, Maria Hicks, L’20, never thought that she would attend law school. In fact, she had never even considered it.

She began her higher education career at The Ohio State University in 2006 with the intent of applying to pharmacy school. Due to unforeseen circumstances, she had to take a leave of absence from school for health reasons.

During this hiatus, Maria met her now husband and stepson and decided to become a stay-at-home mom. Determined to complete her college education, she took online courses and earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from DeVry University.

“I always knew that I wanted to acquire more than a bachelor’s degree, and the main purpose of why I wanted to become a pharmacist was so that I could help people,” Maria says. “But, when I thought about it, I realized that I could actually help more people by going to law school and becoming an attorney.”

She began to explore her options and, ultimately, chose Capital University Law School for two reasons. “First, Capital provides unique opportunities to its students for experiential learning, which I think is important because it better prepares you for a job after graduation,” Maria says. “Secondly, and this is me just being honest: the scholarship. Being a mom, I have to think not only of my own financial savings, but also how my financial decisions now will affect my abilities to help my stepson attend college later.”

Since enrolling at Capital University Law School in 2017, Maria has taken advantage of a variety of extracurricular experiences, including working as a student ambassador with the admissions office, serving as the president for the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, serving as the treasurer for the Women’s Law Association and serving as a member of Capital’s Wellness Committee. In addition, she is a peer advisor to the incoming 1L class and a staff member on Capital’s Law Review.

Maria also has taken advantage of a wealth of opportunities to gain experience and network in the Columbus area. This past summer, she worked as a legal extern for the Franklin County Probate Court. In addition, she currently works as a student representative for both LexisNexis and Themis Bar, and as a legal extern for Nationwide Insurance.

According to Maria, it is because of her life’s journey that she has found herself in law school, and she says, looking back, she wouldn’t change a thing.
