Course Title

Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing II

Professor

Dean Anderson

First Assignment

During our second semester in LARW, we will develop our persuasive writing skills.  We will also focus on researching Ohio materials and properly citing those materials in Ohio courts.  So, you will need to buy one new text—Ohio Legal Research, Second Edition, by Sampson, Hall, and Broering-Jacobs (Carolina Academic Press, 2015): ISBN 978-1-61163-749-6.  You should also download from the Ohio Supreme Court website the Ohio Writing Manual (https://www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/rod/manual.pdf). We will keep our Neumann textbook for help on writing, analysis, and structure.

During our first class on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, we will introduce persuasive writing and will consider research planning in Ohio jurisdictions.  For that first class, read the following materials: (1) Neumann, Chapter 23 (on persuasive writing) and Chapter 28 and Appendix F (on the components of a trial court motion and memorandum); (2) Ross Guberman’s article “Judges Speaking Softly” (found as a pdf under Course Materials on our new Spring LARW II page), and (3) Sampson, Chapters 1 and 11 (on strategies for researching Ohio legal issues).
