Externships: Information for Employers

After spending hours in the classroom learning legal principles, students are often eager to put their theoretical knowledge to use. The Capital University Law School Externship Program offers students an opportunity to experience the practice of law and earn academic credit at the same time. Externships may be with a court, agency, corporate law department, legal service organization, or law firm. Students may be compensated.

For an employer, hosting an extern is an excellent way of contributing to a student’s legal education. As an employer mentor, you and your colleagues offer an extern a first-hand look at what it means to be a lawyer. From working with clients to drafting documents to advocating in court, your supervision of an extern makes the student a better professional tomorrow.

If you are interested in being an externship host site, please contact Assistant Dean Shawn Beem (sbeem@law.capital.edu or 614-236-6889).
