Dr. Sutter is a Northern California native who has made her home in Columbus, Ohio. After receiving a BA from UC San Diego and a MA from New York University, she attended Rutgers University-New Brunswick, where she earned a PhD in the history of gender, race, and sexuality. From 2016 to 2021, Dr. Sutter worked for Rutgers’ Scarlet and Black Project, a research initiative that sought to uncover the untold story of disadvantaged populations in the university’s history. Her research and writing appear in the book series Scarlet and Black: Slavery and Dispossession in Rutgers History, published by Rutgers University Press. She has also worked for the Queer Newark Oral History Project, and from 2020 to 2021, she was the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History at the New-York Historical Society.

As the Assistant Dean of DEI at Cap Law, Dr. Sutter works closely with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the Columbus legal community to cultivate a culture of belonging and to address issues of bias and discrimination. Her office provides programs and initiatives that help attract, support, and nurture a diverse student body with particular focus on backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession. A member of the Law School’s senior leadership team, Dr. Sutter oversees several signature events and programs including the David D. White Award and Scholarship Reception, the Esther Brocker Award and Scholarship Reception, and the Legal Equality and Access Program (LEAP) by Encova. She also occasionally teaches as an adjunct instructor.
