Why Julie Beroes Chose Capital Law

2/19/2016  - Julie Beroes, L’16, was not the typical law school applicant. An actress with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and stage experience in Pittsburgh, New York and London, she wanted to find a law school that would complement her skill set, not change her passion and way of life.

“Capital has a really keen ability to accept the person and make them a lawyer,” says Julie, a third-year student. “I haven’t lost who I am… I haven’t changed anything about myself. I wear my heart on my sleeve still. I haven’t lost my ‘emotionalicality’ - being emotional, passionate, and sensitive. Capital showed me that you can be a strong intelligent woman who is emotional, artistic, and creative.”

Julie wanted to practice in Pennsylvania and join her mother’s family law practice in Pittsburgh. “I was excited about family law” she says. “I worked at my mother’s firm before law school, but I was scared about the transition.” When first looking at law schools, Julie was searching close to home near Pittsburgh, PA. She looked at schools with clinics and moot court teams, but they were missing something.

Then she scheduled a visit at Capital Law. “When I came to Capital, I felt comfortable, I liked it,” she says. “It was a visceral feeling, the same feeling when I visited my undergrad.”

But why did Julie look at Capital?

“My mother was my inspiration to go to law school,” she explains. “She is successful and esteemed in Pittsburgh. I’ve seen the children she has helped in her career. And she is a Capital alum!”

Julie has enjoyed great success at Capital Law. Her fellowship with the Wells Conference and Moot Court Competition keep her busy along with the time she spends at Family & Youth Law Center, a non-profit housed inside Capital. Julie also volunteers her time with the Children and Family Law Association and Women’s Law Association.

She still plans to follow in her mother’s footsteps after graduation in 2016. “I want to work with the lower income clients at my mother’s firm. I want to advocate for women in criminal and family law, and advise them in estate planning,” she says.
