The Passing of Jacqueline Orlando

4/9/2020  -

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jacqueline Orlando, Law School professor and director of the Law Library, on Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

Jacqueline joined the Law School in 1989, mentoring countless students in her role as a professor of legal research, analysis and writing, as well as in her role at the Law Library. She developed one of the first courses focused on electronic legal research, teaching students how to access free and low-cost legal databases so that they could provide high-quality, affordable services to clients.

In addition to her job at the Law School, she served on the admissions committee of the Columbus Bar Association and was a Federal District Court mediator. Prior to joining Capital, Jacqueline was a research librarian at The Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C., and a reference librarian at the Fine Arts Library of the Columbus Metropolitan Library.

“While this is a very sad time for the Capital Law School family, we need to remember Jacqueline’s passion for teaching and her joy in serving students and our community,” said Rachel Janutis, Law School dean. “She was always available for students, from supporting them in their research to making sure the library provided free treats and coffee during exam time and around the bar exam.

“Jacqueline’s husband, Leo, asked that I share with you how proud Jacqueline was to be a member of the Law School community, and how proud she was to be able to train students in legal research and to serve students, faculty, staff and other legal professionals who visited the Law Library. He and their children are deeply touched by the many expressions of concern and support they have received over the past few days.”

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Her family has asked that in lieu of flowers, people wishing to honor Jacqueline can make contributions to the Capital University Law School Dean’s List Merit Scholarship Fund at https://law.capital.edu/give.aspx.
