Relationships, Education Keys to Success for CapLaw Alum

9/9/2019  -

Obtaining a broad and varied education along with continuously building on relationships are the keys to lifelong success. That was the message Larry Hilsheimer, L ’83, shared with Capital University Law School alumni and JD and MBA students at the annual spring networking reception.

Hilsheimer, executive vice president and chief financial officer for Delaware, Ohio-based Greif, a manufacturer of industrial packaging, said, “In business and life, relationships are everything.

“I’m in my fourth professional role and I’ve never interviewed for a job except when I graduated from college. You learn from other people. That relationship-building led to a fulfilling career.”

He also shared with the nearly 60 attendees the importance of learning how to learn and adapt, especially with the evolution of technology. Throughout his career he said, “Those willing to work diligently and utilize the tools, they have ended up benefiting greatly.”

Hilsheimer encouraged the JD and MBA students to value their education saying the skills obtained can be applied to a variety of roles as evidenced by his own professional experiences. Hilsheimer has served as executive vice president and CFO for Scotts Miracle-Gro and Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, and as vice chairman and regional managing partner for Deloitte & Touche USA, LLP.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. Hilsheimer serves on the board of directors of IBP (NYSE), Battelle for Kids and Root Insurance Company, and on the Finance Committee of the Board of The Ohio State University and the Dean’s Advisory Council at Fisher College of Business.
