Biography

Professor Holly L. Coats joined the Law School faculty in July 2021 and will teach Criminal Law during the fall 2021 semester.

Before joining Capital Law, Professor Coats served as a law clerk to The Honorable Algenon L. Marbley of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, to The Honorable Michael H. Watson of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and to the Honorable Jeffery Hopkins of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Ohio. She also practiced law as an associate at BakerHostetler, and as associate legal counsel for Abercrombie & Fitch.  Before attending law school, Professor Coats worked as a community organizer and executive director of a small nonprofit organization in Toledo, Ohio, facilitating collaboration between community members, business leaders, and public officials.

Professor Coats graduated from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law cum laude.  At Moritz, she was an Associate Editor of the Ohio State Law Journal, a member of the national labor and employment moot court team, a recipient of multiple CALI Awards, and an Ohio State Leadership Awards winner. Professor Coats received her B.A. in political science and sociology from The Ohio State University, graduating magna cum laude with honors.
