    Shawn M. Beem currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Professional Development at Capital University Law School, a role in which he develops and manages all programmatic aspects of a comprehensive student-centered professional development program for over 500 J.D., LL.M., M.T., and Paralegal students as well as Law School alumni. He routinely provides individual career counseling, conducts employer outreach and development, and develops educational programming. He is also an adjunct professor in Capital’s paralegal program.

    Locally and nationally recognized for developing innovative programs and presentations concerning career and professional development, Assistant Dean Beem is a frequent presenter at the Columbus Bar Association’s Summer Associate Legal Research Seminar, the Ohio Library Support Staff Institute, and the NALP Annual Education Conference. He has also presented at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. In addition to his presentations, Assistant Dean Beem has published articles in The NALP Bulletin and in the ABA GP|Solo magazine.

    An active member of the Columbus legal community, Assistant Dean Beem serves on the Columbus Bar Association’s Minorities in the Law Committee and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Ohio Military/Veterans Legal Assistance Project.

    Nationally, Assistant Dean Beem served as a director on the board of NALP, as chair of NALP’s LGBT section and Strategic Advisory Council, Midwest Regional Coordinator, and member of the 2012-13 Nominating Committee and 2008 Diversity Summit Planning Committee. His current NALP service includes being a member of NDLS Work Group and a Vice-Chair for the Experienced Professionals Section.

    In 2011, Assistant Dean Beem received the Graduate of the Last Decade award from Capital’s Law Alumni Association for his significant achievements and notable contributions to the legal profession and the Law School.

    While in law school, Assistant Dean Beem served as law clerk for the Office of Disciplinary Counsel of the Supreme Court of Ohio and an extern to the Ohio CASA/GAL Association. He also served as the public interest law coordinator for Capital Law School and was co-president of the Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Law Association. He holds a Juris Doctor from Capital University Law School and is a recipient of the Ronald I. Friedman Award in recognition of his leadership and service as a student. 

    Assistant Dean Beem holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and International Studies from the University of Dayton. He spent a year studying at Université de Strasbourg in France earning a Diplôme d’Etudes Françaises as well as serving as an English lecturer at the Collège Episcopale St. Etienne. Assistant Dean Beem was also a Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholar.
