    Financial Aid

Students pursuing a Paralegal, Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC), or Life Care Planner (LCP) professional certificate may qualify for federal financial aid. To apply for federal financial aid, students will need to complete the 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. When completing the FAFSA, the applicant will be required to enter the federal code for their institution. Capital University 's federal code is 003023. There is not a branch code associated with the law school campus. The six-digit code should be used for all programs offered through Capital University.

Students enrolled in Capital's certificate programs will only qualify for the Federal Stafford Loan program. Unfortunately, state and federal grants are no longer available to students working beyond a Bachelor's Degree. Once a student is accepted into their program and has filed their FAFSA, they will receive a packet from the Financial Aid Office detailing their Federal Stafford Loan eligibility. The packet will also provide instructions for how to apply for loans for which they qualify. The maximum amount of Federal Stafford Loan eligibility a student can receive in Capital's certificate programs is $12,500.

    Federal Stafford Loan Program

The Federal Stafford Loan Program provides low-interest loans to students to assist with educational expenses. The Stafford Loan Program is federally guaranteed, which means a borrower does not need to pass a credit check to obtain funding through this program. There are three (3) minimum criteria that a student must meet to receive the Stafford Loan:

    • The borrower must be a United States citizen or national, or an eligible non-citizen.
    • The borrower must not be in a current "default" status on a previous federal educational loan.
    • The borrower must not have exceeded the aggregate Federal Stafford Loan limit ($138,500).

If you meet these minimum criteria, you are eligible to borrow through the Stafford Loan Program. There are two types of Federal Stafford Loans, subsidized and unsubsidized.

    Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans

The Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need based on the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans do not begin accruing interest until 6 months after a student either graduates or withdraws from the program of study. The maximum amount that a student can receive in subsidized loan eligibility is $5,500 per academic year. Effective beginning July 1, 2012, graduate and professional students are no longer eligible to received Federal Direct Stafford Loans. Only unsubsidized loans will be available under the Direct Stafford Loan Program. This Federal mandated change will not reduce students' total financial aid availability.

    Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans

The Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is awarded to students who may not be eligible for all or part of the subsidized loan. Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans will begin to accrue interest once disbursed; however, the student is not required to make payments on the loan (principle or interest) until he or she either graduates or withdraws from the program of study. The interest rates on the Federal Stafford Loans are determined by the federal government and are the same for all students. The maximum amount that a student can receive in unsubsidized loan eligibility is $7,000 (minus any subsidized loan received). Effective beginning July 1, 2012, the maximum amount that a student can receive in unsubsidized loan eligibility will be $12,500.

As a student in one of Capital's certificate programs, you have the option of borrowing Federal Stafford Loans funds in excess of the amount needed for tuition. When students opt to do this, they receive a refund check from the university in the amount of the overage each term. Students may use this overage for books, living expenses, or any additional cost associated with their education.
