February 27, 2009

Associate Dean and
Professor Shirley Mays

On Friday, March 13, 2009, Capital University Law School Associate Dean Shirley L. Mays will be honored with the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) annual Martin Luther King Jr. Image Award. The event will take place from 5:30 – 7:15 pm at the law offices of Thompson Hine, 41 S. High St., Suite 1700, Columbus, Ohio.

Each year, the Capital University Law School BLSA awards the Martin Luther King Jr. Image Award to recognize individuals who honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy through service to the community. The award recognizes individuals who possess such qualities as leadership, courage and faith — qualities that made Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. an exceptional leader. The award also recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of African Americans and who hold a thorough knowledge of what it means to be an African American.

Professor Mays serves as the Law School’s associate dean of academic affairs. She teaches courses in local government law, sex-based discrimination, and business associations. She is currently serving on the Ohio Ethics Commission as vice chair. Prior to joining Capital’s law faculty in 1991, Professor Mays practiced law in the public/municipal finance department with the law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. She was formerly a judicial clerk for the Honorable Thomas J. Moyer, chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. She served as a visiting professor at the University of Kentucky in fall 2001.

Past recipients of the Martin Luther King Jr. Image Award include the Hon. Guy L. Reece II; Steven C.
