CapLaw Represents: Judge Michael Watson on the Federal Bench

Judge Michael Watson, L’87, H’05, is a United States District Judge for the Southern District of Ohio, in Columbus. He was appointed by President George W. Bush and sworn in on October 1, 2004.

Prior to his appointment, Judge Watson served on the Tenth District Court of Appeals in Franklin County, from 2003 – 2004. He served on the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas from 1996 to 2004. During his last three years on the trial court, Judge Watson served as Administrative Judge.

Before serving on the Common Pleas Court, Judge Watson served as Chief Counsel to Governor George Voinovich. He also served as Deputy Chief Counsel to the Governor and Chief Counsel for the Ohio Department of Commerce.

Judge Watson practiced law from 1988 to 1991 with the law firms of Lane, Alton and Horst and Delligatti, Hollenbaugh, Briscoe and Miless, focusing primarily on personal injury litigation, employment disputes, workers' compensation, and criminal defense.

Judge Watson is a past President, and current member, of the Federal Bar Association. He served in the United States Air Force from 1975 to 1978 and was in the Ohio Air National Guard from 1978 to 1984.

Judge Watson holds a Bachelor degree from The Ohio State University and received his law degree from Capital University Law School in 1987. While in law school, Judge Watson served as bailiff and law clerk to Judge Tommy L. Thompson, a common pleas court judge whom he was appointed to succeed. When asked about his fondest memory of law school, he replied “The friendships I have carried with me in my 30 years of practice.”

Judge Watson is from Columbus, Ohio. He is married and has 3 grown sons, 2 granddaughters and an Airedale named Clementine.
