Life Care Planner Program Objectives


  • LCP Mission Statement:

    The mission of the Life Care Planner (“LCP”) program is to prepare students to serve as life care planners in complex litigation cases involving catastrophic injuries, accidents, or chronic illnesses. The LCP Program will educate students about the fundamentals and methodologies used in evaluating a client’s medical condition and applying the information to prepare a comprehensive life care plan. The LCP Program also will equip students to successfully develop, market, and maintain a consulting business utilizing their skills as a life care planner.

    LCP Program Objectives:

    We are committed to ensuring our students are prepared and equipped to meet the demands of the life care planning profession upon completion of this certificate program. The Life Care Planner Program at Capital University Law School expects the program staff and faculty to meet the following program objectives:

    1. Introduce students to the life care planning profession and the role of life care planners in today’s complex litigation structure.

    2. Teach students the fundamentals of and methodologies used in preparing a life care plan, and how to comprehensively and systematically determine the individual care needs and related costs for someone who has experienced a catastrophic injury, accident or chronic illness.

    3. Provide the requisite training and education necessary for students who complete the Life Care Planner Program to qualify for the ICHCC certification exam and become certified life care planners.

    4. Guide students in preparing a comprehensive life care plan and defending the plan in deposition and mock-trial environments by participating in direct- and cross-examination by practicing attorneys and critiqued by their peers, a judge, and jurors.

    5. Familiarize students with the tools and knowledge necessary to create and sustain an effective life care planning consulting business.

    LCP Program Student Learning Outcomes:

    Upon completion of the LCP program, students will be able to:

    1. Identify the procedures and methodologies used for developing a life care plan.

    2. Apply multiple resources available to support the recommendations contained in the life care plan.

    3. Assess the individual care needs and associated costs for someone who has experienced a catastrophic injury, accident or chronic illness.

    4. Prepare a comprehensive life care plan that details a client’s long-term needs and associated costs.

    5. Present and defend the contents of an individual life care plan in a deposition and a mock trial setting.

    6. Successfully complete the life care planner certification exam as administered by the ICHCC.
