Grad Law LLM Admission Process

  • Capital University Law School LL.M. in Taxation, Business, or Business & Taxation Application Instructions 

    Online Application

    In assessing an applicant’s academic record, the committee will pay attention to the nature and quality of previous educational experiences both undergraduate and graduate (including the applicant’s educational institutions, class rank, grade point average generally, and grades in courses related to taxation and business). Also, the committee will consider the prospective student’s work experience, if any. 

    Applications to the LL.M. program are accepted at all times. Applicants may apply for fall, spring, and summer admission. Application deadlines are:

    Spring 2013: Dec. 10, 2012
    Summer 2013: April 2, 2013
    Fall 2013: July 15, 2013

    All applicants are required to submit their application online via the LSAC online application process. Applicants may register with the Credential Assembly Service (CAS) and submit transcripts and letters of recommendation through CAS or directly to the law school at the following address:

    Read all the information carefully before submitting your LSAC online application. Files are not reviewed for admission until all required materials are received. Failure to answer all questions or submit all required documents will delay application processing.

    APPLICANTS WITH U.S. DEGREES

    Applicant Requirements  


    1. A J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school or a law degree and a license to practice law in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. 
    2. Demonstrated aptitude for tax law or business law studies. Factors that may be considered include: 
      1. Law school academic record (preference is given to those graduating in the top-half of their law school class); 
      2. Relevant published and unpublished written work; and 
      3. The nature and duration of legal or tax/business-related work experience. 
       
    3. Demonstrated successful completion of the following law school courses: 
      1. an introductory federal income taxation course; 
      2. a basic business association course(s) (including agency, partnership and corporations); and 
      3. for applicants for the LL.M. in Business, a course in Article 9 of the UCC (secured transactions). 
       
     
    Application Instructions
    Before a candidate is considered for admission to the LL.M. program, we must receive:

     
    1. The online application, which includes a personal statement and a resume. 
      • Personal statement: The statement gives applicants the opportunity to describe their reasons for pursuing an LL.M. degree and to elaborate on their abilities and experience. 
       
    2. The $35 application fee. 
    3. Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. 
    4. Two letters of recommendation. 
     
     
    CAPITAL UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES & CURRENT STUDENTS
    The application fee is waived for Capital University and Capital University Law School alumni. Contact email gradlaw@law.capital.edu or 614.236.6564 for an application fee waiver code. 

    Transcripts for Capital University Law School alumni and current students can come directly from the Office of Records and Registration. Contact Marty Hendren at mhendren@law.capital.edu and notify her that you are applying to the LL.M. program and are requesting that a copy of your transcript be released to the director of the Graduate Law Programs. 

    Letters of recommendation are not required, but you must submit the names and contact information of two professional or academic references. 

     
    APPLICANTS WITH FOREIGN DEGREES
    In addition to the information above, the following information is for applicants with degrees from institutions outside the United States.

    Application Requirements

    1. The applicant must have earned a J.D. or an LL.B. from an accredited foreign law school or university. 
    2. If English is not your first language OR you attended a school in which the majority of classes were not conducted in English, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The TOEFL and IELTS may be waived if you have earned a degree from a college or university in the United States. In lieu of a TOEFL or an IELTS score, the applicant may provide a GRE, GMAT, or LSAT score.
    3. For applicants required to provide a TOEFL or an IELTS score: The minimum acceptable score on the computerized TOEFL exam is 250 and the minimum acceptable score on the internet-based TOEFL exam is 100. The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7.0. 
    4. The applicant must secure appropriate visas for entry into the United States.
