Biography

Professor Ferriell has been on the faculty since 1987.  He has also taught at law schools at the University of Illinois, Santa Clara University, Ohio Northern University, the University of San Diego, the Ohio State University, and Seattle University. At Capital he teaches Contracts, Bankruptcy, Commercial Law and Professional Responsibility. He is the author of two law school hornbooks, “Understanding Contracts” (5th ed., 2023) and “Understanding Bankruptcy” (4th ed. 2019, with Edward J. Janger). He has been a member of Ohio’s delegation to the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (“Uniform Law Commission”) since 2007. He is a member of the ULC’s Uniform Commercial Code Committee, and its drafting committees for the Uniform Debt Collection Default Judgments Act and the Recurring Service Charges Act. He also serves as the ULC’s Ohio Legislative Liaison and is the former chair of the ULC’s “Academic Partnership” Committee.

His public service includes serving as a member of the German Village Commission, which reviews proposed architectural changes to structures in Columbus’s historic German Village neighborhood, just south of downtown Columbus. He previously served, from 2008-2016,  as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association, a private religious foundation in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts (MVCMA),  and was President of the MVCMA from 2013-2016. He worked for many years as a volunteer for the “Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure” (GOBA) and the “Tour of the Scioto River Valley (TOSRV).  He has been licensed to practice law in California since 1978 and is also licensed to practice in the Northern District of California and before the United States Supreme Court.

In addition to teaching and writing, Professor Ferriell also enjoys bicycling, amateur radio (K8ZDA), and historic preservation. He and his wife have been on ten European bicycling vacations and have bicycled throughout Ohio.
