David D. White Award - Capital University Law School

David D. White Award

  • David D. White Portrait The David D. White Award and Scholarship memorializes the outstanding accomplishments of the Law School’s first African American graduate, David D. White. Mr. White graduated from the Columbus School of Law (now Capital University Law School) in 1931. The first African American attorney licensed to practice in Columbus, Mr. White practiced for more than 57 years as a partner in the firm of Bell, White and Ross. He was a member of the Columbus Bar Association Board of Governors, the Ohio Public Defender Commission, the Ohio State Bar Association’s Council of Delegates and the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. Mr. White passed away in 1992, and was honored posthumously as one of the first year’s inductees into the Law School Hall of Honor.

Capital University Law School and the African American Law Alumni Association have presented the David D. White Award to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the African American community. The award is presented at an annual reception hosted by a Columbus area law firm or organization. This event helps support the David D. White Scholarship Endowment at Capital University Law School, created in 1989 by the African American Law Alumni Association.
